Get outside in the new year with winter recreation! There are many places around our watershed that rent things like skis, snowshoes, skates, and other winter gear. Pictured is a past year at Richardson Nature Center and their snowshoes. Check with other Three Rivers parks in your area, nature centers, and even some city locations like Centennial Lakes Park.
Or, just put on a coat and get outside, no fancy gear required. Enjoy the season!

Low Salt Design is a new set of guiding principles and strategies from Bolton and Menk. These strategies provide a comprehensive approach to reducing impacts from winter road salt. While the program is new, the concepts are familiar, and you can download the free Low Salt Design guide on their website here: https://www.bolton-menk.com/resources/low-salt-design-strategies/

Though it feels like winter has been here for a while already, today marks the start of winter. The winter solstice also marks the shortest day of the year, which means that the days start getting longer again! Now get out there and enjoy the season and the snow.

We need volunteers! We're working with researchers and volunteers to measure snow piles in parking lots across the watershed. Researchers with Bolton and Menk hope to use this data to develop a formula that will predict area needed for snow storage. By right-sizing storage areas, we hope to reduce snow pile melting and sprawling across the whole parking lot.

This winter is shaping up to be quite snowy, but we hope that doesn't mean extra salt! More salt does not mean more melting, it really depends on the temperature to determine how fast the salt will work. We have multiple MPCA trainings in the new year to learn how to salt effectively, including January 14th and February 19. Find them at the MPCA Smart Salting training calendar page.
