A young resident of the Nine Mile Creek watershed noticed buckthorn growing in the woods along Bush Lake, near property of the Izaak Walton League of America. After learning how invasive buckthorn can be and the harm it causes to native habitats, she decided to take action. She started a petition supporting the restoration of the woodland area, and it has already gathered more than 80 signatures.

On May 20, 2026, she shared her story during the public comment period at the beginning of the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District Board meeting. Her remarks were a powerful reminder that community members of all ages can make a difference and help advocate for the natural spaces they care about.

This project also highlights the value of public engagement in shaping district priorities. Over the years, the district has expanded opportunities for residents and community partners to provide input and collaborate on some aspects of our projects, including restoring the woodland area Fall spoke about. It is a great example of how community voices can help guide watershed management decisions and lead to meaningful improvements.

Keep grass clippings and fertilizer out of the street. These add nutrients to lakes and can cause nuisance algae blooms. Sweep up spills and sweep or blow clippings back onto the lawn.

Looking for something to do this summer, check out the events happening all year through Sacred Water Shared: Future.https://sacredwatersharedfuture.org/events/month/

Sacred Water Shared Future is celebrating community, storytelling, education, and conservation as part of a year-long campaign in 2026. The campaign honors the central role the Mississippi River has played in our region while acknowledging its deep history, sacredness, and resilience. Our hope is that the campaign will inspire collaboration and shared action in 2026, and set the stage for the next 100 years of healing for both the river and the life it supports.
