March is Women's History Month. Nine Mile Creek Watershed District will highlight 4 women in Minnesota's history this month to honor the hard-working women in our state and the US.

Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin (Metis/Turtle Mountain Chippewa) was born in Pembina, North Dakota. Her father, J.B. Bottineau, was a lawyer who worked as an advocate for the Ojibwa/Chippewa Nation in Minnesota and North Dakota. While a teenager, her family lived in Minneapolis, and Marie attended school there as well as in nearby St. Paul. She spent some time across the border at St. John’s Ladies College in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada), and returned to Minneapolis to work as a clerk in her father’s law office. She and her father moved to Washington, DC in the early 1890s to defend the treaty rights of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Nation. There, they became part of an established community of professional Native Americans who lived and worked in the capital.

Learn more about her work at https://www.nps.gov/people/marie-louise-bottineau-baldwin.htm. If the link doesn't, work go to the National Park Service website and search "Marie Louise Bottineau Baldwin".

You know it's Pi Day, but did you also know it's International Day of Action for Rivers? Math nerds and nature nerds unite! Even if you don't live by a river, your actions can still affect rivers. Cleaning up dog poop and only using melting salt when absolutely necessary are two actions that can help rivers in what's left of winter.
Photo Contest winner of the Minnesota River taken by Ryan G.

Spring is almost here in Minnesota, and with it comes the urge to get out in the garden. But wait! ✋ Hold off on the yard cleanup for now. Many pollinators are still overwintering in last year’s plant material.
