The black-capped chickadee is a year-round resident in Minnesota. They have been known to store food in tree bark crevices and small cavities as a way to survive the winter; they can also lower their body temperature on winter nights to use less energy.

This delightful bird is known as wiyuṡkiƞṡkiƞna in the Dakota language and gijigijigaaneshiinh in Ojibwemowin (the Ojibwe language); both words embody their bouncy calls. You can hear recordings of people saying these words at the Dakota online dictionary and the Ojibwe people's dictionary.

Love the lines! Many cities around the metro have starting applying brine in these lines to roads during the winter. This salt solution helps to prevent ice from sticking to the roads, allowing plows to remove snow more easily.

Brine can also be applied before the storm and starts working much faster than regular rock salt. It also has less chloride overall to get to the same amount of clear road surface, making it a lot better for our lakes and creeks. Maybe you'll see these if you're driving around the metro today, like the staff member who snapped this photo in Hopkins.

Clean water is essential, but unfortunately, plastics in our environment don't go away. Instead, they break down into smaller pieces of plastic that pollute our water and harm wildlife. This February, join NMCWD staff in going plastic-free to protect our rivers and lakes. Kickstart your plastic-free journey at tcplasticfree.ecochallenge.org

Get outside in the new year with winter recreation! There are many places around our watershed that rent things like skis, snowshoes, skates, and other winter gear. Pictured is a past year at Richardson Nature Center and their snowshoes. Check with other Three Rivers parks in your area, nature centers, and even some city locations like Centennial Lakes Park.
Or, just put on a coat and get outside, no fancy gear required. Enjoy the season!
