District Hiring Summer Intern

Job Posting: Field Intern

Position Title:    Field Intern (Fisheries/Water Quality Monitoring)
Position Status:   Non-Exempt, Temporary
Reports To:        Water Resources Project Manager
Salary:                  $20/hour with earned sick and safe time
Hours:                  40 hours/week with occasional weekend and evening work; in-person
Term:                    May-August 2026

Purpose:

Intern will develop/enhance their knowledge of watershed management, water resources and local government, while providing support for the district’s fisheries and water resources programs. This position will also provide support for day-to-day office and building activities such as organization of files and outdoor site maintenance.

 

Responsibilities:

1) Assist with fisheries management fieldwork including (75%):
a) In-lake goldfish and carp removals
b) Assist with electrofishing and trap net surveys
c) Assist with fisheries habitat improvement study
d) Data collection, entry, and basic analysis

2) Support water quality monitoring including (15%):
a) Assist with water quality sampling
b) Collect zooplankton and algal samples

3) Conduct site inspections for the regulatory program (5%):

4) Other duties, as assigned, which may include supporting maintenance of stormwater best management practices at the district’s office (5%).

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • High school diploma; currently enrolled or successfully earned a bachelor or graduate degree in water and natural resources management, environmental education, landscape architecture, urban planning, geography, geology, engineering, or related field.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Skills in identifying Minnesota fish and aquatic plants species or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to operate a 4WD truck. Experience driving with a trailer, preferred.
  • Comfortable riding in and navigating canoe or motorboat.
  • Ability to take initiative in completing and organizing work assignments.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and own means of transportation.

Physical Requirements

This work regularly requires working outside in varied weather conditions. This work requires being comfortable handling live fish and other organisms. This work regularly requires moving and carrying equipment up to 50 pounds, potentially in rough terrain. This work occasionally requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time while working at a computer in an office setting.
