    The Nine Mile Creek Watershed District is approximately 50 square miles and encompasses the land area draining to Nine Mile Creek. We serve the residents, property-owners and visitors of the cities in our district: Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Richfield.

    9 Mile Creek Discovery Point

    Discovery Point is our headquarters and a unique educational facility. Visitors learn best practices in water management and conservation in a wooded setting. The 5.3 acre, wooded site connects to walking trails and a wetland.

If you have native plants on your property, consider collecting some of the seeds to plant elsewhere. Or, donate them to our Little Seed Library for others. Some seeds are easier to collect than others; for instance, hyssop and bergamot can literally be shaken into a bag, whereas rattlesnake master or coneflower need to be plucked apart from their prickly seed head.

Construction has started on the restoration project of the south fork of Nine Mile Creek in Eden Prairie. This section of the creek often had low or non-existent flow in dry times, which makes it hard for fish to move freely up and down the stream. To fix this, big drops or barriers are removed and the stream channel is narrowed to make more consistent flow. Rock riffles are also added to promote in stream habitat and fish passage. We saw this practice put to the test not long after installation, as staff on site captured this little fish moving upstream in the newly fixed section!

Did you know that goldfish should never be released into the wild? They become an invasive species, outcompeting native fish, and preying on native fish eggs and they also increase turbidity (sediment particles in water) which reduces sunlight from reaching aquatic plants needed for a healthy ecosystem. Overall, goldfish negatively impact the quality of our waters in many ways. That's why we've been removing 100's of pounds of goldfish with this box-net from Lake Cornelia in efforts to help native species and water quality. With that said, goldfish belong in a personal pond/aquarium as pets like the one at our Discovery Point. If you have a goldfish you can no longer care for, you can: -Ask a local pet store for resources -Check fish forums on social media for rehoming -Find an aquarium owner that can take them and provide them a new home
