We have been hearing the song of the Northern Cardinal lately. This could mean that spring is approaching! Unlike most other birds, both the male and female cardinals sing, sometimes sharing phrases to communicate.

One of the great benefits of having a greenhouse at Discovery Point is growing plants in the middle of winter. After some seed stratification, we potted these in early January, and they are now sprouting. So far, we have some milkweed, wild onion, and Rattlesnake Master. Keep an eye out for more updates on these saplings as they grow! #nmcwd

Exciting things are happening in our greenhouse. Two of our Aloe Vera plants are about to bloom! This only occurs once the plant is four years old, and the conditions must be just right. We will post again when it blooms, so be on the lookout!

We've been hearing some hoots around Discovery Point lately, and that is because it's Great Horned Owl nesting season! These creatures are sometimes known as a tiger with wings because of their fierce hunting skills. During this season, owls will either make their own nest or use abandoned nests of hawks or squirrels. The female owl can lay up to 5 eggs which will be incubated for about 30 days before hatching.

This Great Horned Owl was spotted eating a snake at Discovery Point a few months ago. #nmcwd #minnesotadnr

The subnivean zone, it's the small space between the fallen snow and the earth. It is also the space small creatures such as mice and voles use to stay alive and keep warm during these cold winter months. These animals will create small tunnels and living spaces all throughout the subnivean zone. It can be up to 32 degrees in this space regardless of the temperature above the snow.
What kind of animal do you think made this hole at Discovery Point?
