March is Women's History Month. Nine Mile Creek Watershed District will highlight 4 women in Minnesota's history this month to honor the hard-working women in our state and the US.

Nellie Francis pressed the limits of what an African American woman was permitted to achieve in early twentieth-century Minnesota. She was a churchwoman, clubwoman, suffragist, organizer, singer, civil rights worker, patriot, and wife to Minnesota’s first African American diplomat, William T. Francis.

Learn more about her work at https://www.mnhs.org/mnopedia/search/index/person/francis-nellie-1874-1969. If the link doesn't, work go to the Minnesota Historical Society website and search "Nellie Francis".

When Dr. Martha Ripley and her family moved to Minneapolis in 1883, she had just completed medical training at Boston University School of Medicine. At forty-one, though, she was no newcomer to the medical profession.

As you know, Nine Mile Creek flows into the Minnesota River and eventually the Mississippi River—connecting our watershed to something much bigger. This year, Sacred Waters Shared Future is celebrating 100 years of stewardship that helped bring a once–near-dead river back to life. Join an event or host your own and be part of the celebration.
