Garlic mustard is an invasive species that outcompetes native plants and takes over forest floors, preventing other plant regeneration. This invasive species has become an increasingly large problem in the Midwest and management is key for the health of our city’s environment.

Friday flowers! Well, it will have flowers soon...here is Virginia Waterleaf! One of the later spring ephemeral wildflowers to bloom, its flowers look like little pom poms or firework bursts. Come for a walk around Discovery Point to find these cool plants!

It's the season for trash cleanups! Our new Adopt a Creek sections are being claimed and cleaned by great volunteers all across the watershed. We estimate that volunteers have filled at least 25 big bags of trash from the creek this spring alone. Along with the usual candy wrappers and plastic bottles, people have found tires, poles, and a suitcase in the creek!

We are starting up our soil testing program again this spring! Any property within the watershed boundaries can submit a soil sample, and we will take it to the UMN Soil Testing Lab. The watershed district will pay the testing fee, but only if you sign up and drop your sample off at our office--we are not reimbursing people for tests.
Go to our website to sign up and submit a soil sample: ninemilecreek.org/soil-testing

There's still time to register for our trash cleanup on May 2 at Hopkins Valley Park! Since this is near the headwaters, our work protects the entirety of the creek downstream from getting as polluted.
This event is a partnership with the City of Hopkins and Hopkins PD.
