The subnivean space is a fascinating area under the snow in winter. Small mammals like mice and voles use this space all winter long. Believe it or not, this space stays right around 32 degrees because of the insulating power of the snow and heat from the ground. Creatures also use this space to gather food and hide from predators.
You can find entrances to the subnivean layer in these little holes in the snow, and you may see evidence of paths once the snow melts.
