New MPCA Smart Salting Training video

Winter is here, bringing with it the recurring management of slippery snow and ice. The tons of salt used every year for management damages infrastructure and vegetation, and pollutes our valuable lakes, streams, and groundwater.

To help reduce the amount of salt going into our lakes and rivers, the MPCA offers a certification training program for public and private winter maintenance professionals. Take a few minutes to watch the new MPCA Smart Salting Training for Winter Maintenance Professionals promo video! Hear the benefits of getting certified from other trained maintenance pros that are now using less salt and still offering a high level of service!

A short video from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) about its Smart Salting Level 1 training for winter maintenance professionals. There are two versions of the class: one for roads, and one for parking lots and sidewalks.

Through presentations and class exercises, participants learn about equipment calibration, pavement temperatures, how different deicers work, switching to liquids, application rates, storage, and environmental impacts. People who pass the certification test are listed on the MPCA website, and the certification lasts five years.

Managers from organizations that took the training describe how it got their whole crew on the same page and invested in using less salt while keeping surfaces safe.
