The Nine Mile Creek Watershed District is approximately 50 square miles and encompasses the land area draining to Nine Mile Creek. We serve the residents, property-owners and visitors of the cities in our district: Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Richfield.

Every one lives in a watershed, and we all have a role in protecting our water resources. Small and incremental actions can add up to big effects on the health of our lakes and creeks.

9 Mile Creek Discovery Point
Discovery Point is our headquarters and a unique educational facility. Visitors learn best practices in water management and conservation in a wooded setting. The 5.3 acre, wooded site connects to walking trails and a wetland.

With snow in the forecast, we need to remember to keep lawn leaves out of our streets. Snow plus leaves make it harder for streetsweepers and snow plows to do their work.

Here we see a street sweeper in Bloomington demonstrating their essential job keeping our streets clear of leaves and other debris. Help make their job easier by keeping your lawn leaves away from the curbs!

Another way to take care of those leaves is to use them as free mulch for your garden beds. Rake them into areas that might need a bit more soil protection over the winter. Don’t rake your leaves into the street!! They go straight down the storm drains and into nearby lakes and creeks. There, they break down, adding way too many nutrients into our waters. Yes, city sweepers clean our streets, but they only pick up leaves that have fallen naturally on our roads. If they had to pick up all the leaves from our yards too, it would slow them down quite a bit. What’s a better option? Mulch them into your lawn or compost them!
