Geoffrey Nash of Edina is appointed to the
Nine Mile Creek Watershed District
Board of Managers

Edina, Minn. – Geoffrey Nash, Edina, was recently appointed to the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District Board of Managers for a three-year term. Nash is very familiar with the Watershed District and its activities since he served for two years as the volunteer chairman of the Watershed District’s Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC) from 2002 to 2004. His involvement as a volunteer member with the CAC began in 1998. As a geologist who has been working in environmental consulting for the past 18 years, the Watershed District was a "natural" choice for him.

“As a manager, I will focus on flood control and water quality of the creek and lakes within our watershed, as well as promoting citizen participation by residents, who live beside these beautiful resources.” says Nash.

The Board of Manager’s mission is to protect and enhance water quality, to protect the health of watershed district residents, and to protect residents from flooding. The managers review permits approved by the cities on development that affect water and make recommendations in approving those permits to ensure protection of the creek, lakes and wetlands. The Watershed District has a vast amount of data and information on the creek and area lakes because it has been carrying out scientific studies on these water bodies since it was started in 1959. It is about 50 square miles and includes much of Edina and Bloomington, and portions of Minnetonka, Hopkins, Eden Prairie and Richfield.

"Our function is to help protect the watershed. In this capacity, we're always open for suggestions for new issues to bring before the board. Most importantly, we want to be responsive to residents' concerns. We want the public to know that everything flows downstream and eventually ends up in the Minnesota and the Mississippi Rivers. When we take care of the water in our watershed, we are helping our neighbors downstream. It's also about personal choices, such as using phosphorus-free fertilizer and preventing oil spills from getting into the storm drains," Nash notes. He also encourages all residents who are interested in water quality issues to come to the monthly Citizens’ Advisory Committee meetings and share their ideas.

Water has always been an important issue for Nash. Minnesota has a great outdoors heritage, and he is trying to build stewardship and appreciation of the environment in his three children. From downhill skiing at Highland Park near Bush Lake, to canoeing and catching a few Sunnies at Lake Cornelia, Nash encourages his children to enjoy the outdoors. Nash has lived in Edina for 14 years. He received a bachelor's degree in geology from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and an MBA from Boston University. He is employed by Wenck Associates, Inc., an environmental consulting company. He and his family run Rainwater Soap Co., LLC and sell their soap at the Hopkins Farmers Market in the summer.

Residents of the Watershed District are invited to attend the Board of Managers' regular meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square, in the lower level and the back of the Edina branch of the Hennepin County Library. Any resident interested in water issues may attend the Citizens' Advisory Committee meetings also on the third Wednesday of each month, at 6:30 p.m. at the same location, unless otherwise noted on the website.
